KOBA — SMA Negeri 1 Koba has officially implemented the "English Day" program, held every Thursday, to support character building and positive habits at school as part of the 7 Habits of Great Indonesian Children initiative. Carrying the motto "Speak English, Be Confident!" and the slogan "Small Steps, Big Changes for a Brighter Future", the entire school community is encouraged to actively use English in daily communication.
This practice applies to everyone across the campus, including students, teachers, and administrative staff.
The atmosphere at SMAN 1 Koba on Thursdays is lively and inspiring. Teachers and students can be seen enthusiastically conversing in English along hallway corridors and inside classrooms. Although some face slight difficulties or stumble over vocabulary, their enthusiasm and confidence remain high.
Headmaster Budi, M.Pd., alongside Learning Program Coordinator Desi Susanti, M.Pd., emphasized that the initiative focuses on building confidence in a supportive environment. English Day is not designed to punish or embarrass students for making mistakes, but rather to serve as a practical space for habituation.
To ease the transition, everyday habits focus on simple interactions:
Greetings & Responses: Everyday expressions such as "Good morning" and "How are you?"
Classroom & Daily Expressions: Standard phrases like "May I go out?", "Excuse me", "Thank you", and "You're welcome".
Short Conversations & Games: Brief dialogue practice and quick English challenges.
The program relies on four core principles: Fun, Simple, Consistent, and Supportive. Errors in pronunciation or grammar are treated as natural parts of the learning process, and mocking mistakes is strictly prohibited.
Through English Day, SMA Negeri 1 Koba aims to equip students with Better Communication, a Global Mindset, and a Brighter Future.
